Deputy ID’d in shooting that wounded Santa Rosa man

A deputy who shot a man in a southwest Santa Rosa driveway last week was identified Tuesday as Deputy Marcus Holton, Sonoma County sheriff’s officials said.

Gary Pickard Jr.

Holton remained on paid administrative leave while the Sheriff’s Office continued its internal review of the incident, which is standard in such cases, Assistant Sheriff Lorenzo Dueñas said.

Holton fired five shots at Gary Pickard Jr., 27, of Santa Rosa Friday after Pickard jumped out of an SUV and appeared to be reaching into his waistband, officials said.

Two shots hit Pickard, one in the abdomen and another in his buttocks, Dueñas said. He was expected to survive and remains at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Law enforcement agencies had been on the lookout for Pickard following a report that Pickard’s girlfriend had stolen, forged and cashed several personal checks from a person living in the home, authorities said.

Holton works a day-shift patrol and has been in law enforcement for 13 years, seven-and-a-half with the Sheriff’s Office. He hasn’t been involved in prior shooting investigations, Dueñas said.
